Horticulture
Growing plants more efficiently
The horticulture program currently has three areas of research emphasis: 1) evaluate underused native woody landscape plant species to select phenotypes with superior ornamental qualities and tolerance to abiotic stressors (e.g., drought, high/low temperatures, high soil pH, etc.); develop propagation and finishing protocols for these rare natives to facilitate nursery adoption; and 3) identify best management practices that improve water and fertilizer efficiency for container nurseries while mitigating agrichemical leaching and runoff.
This program is led by USDA scientist Dr. Jake Shreckhise who can be reached at (931) 815-5144.
